North Glengarry Township offers ample opportunities to discover roots, play outdoors, kick back, enjoy music, eat and shop.
The Glengarry County Archives, located in the northern section of Glengarry District High School in Alexandria, is the largest repository of historical records in eastern Ontario and contains the foremost collection of history about Glengarry County found anywhere.
The township boasts a wide range of recreational facilities, such as golf courses, the Tim Hortons Dome in Alexandria, arenas in Maxville and Alexandria, a skateboard park and fourseason networks of hiking and cross-country ski trails.
You might notice that both Alexandria and Maxville are undergoing makeovers. Thanks to North Glengarry’s Community Improvement Plan, downtown properties are being upgraded.
Island Park in Alexandria is a great place to relax. Take a dip in Mill Pond, lounge on the beach, stroll along the pathway, watch the resident flock of Canada geese, have a picnic. Children of all ages can cool off in the splash park. After you have worked up an appetite, check out the wide variety of bars, bistros, snack bars and restaurants that serve up diverse menus that are bound to please everyone.
At farmers’ markets, consumers can make a connection with producers.
The experience will stimulate the locavore in you. Meet the people who put baked goods, cheeses, fruits, vegetables and bread on your table.
For a taste of history, War of 1812 re-enactments are staged at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan in the fall.
Parades are organized in local communities on Canada Day, at Christmas and during winter carnivals.
