North Glen­garry Town­ship of­fers am­ple op­por­tu­ni­ties to dis­cover roots, play out­doors, kick back, en­joy mu­sic, eat and shop.

The Glen­garry County Ar­chives, lo­cated in the north­ern sec­tion of Glen­garry District High School in Alexan­dria, is the largest repos­i­tory of his­tor­i­cal records in eastern On­tario and con­tains the fore­most col­lec­tion of his­tory about Glen­garry County found any­where.

The town­ship boasts a wide range of recre­ational fa­cil­i­ties, such as golf cour­ses, the Tim Hor­tons Dome in Alexan­dria, are­nas in Maxville and Alexan­dria, a skate­board park and foursea­son net­works of hik­ing and cross-coun­try ski trails.

You might no­tice that both Alexan­dria and Maxville are un­der­go­ing makeovers. Thanks to North Glen­garry’s Com­mu­nity Im­prove­ment Plan, down­town prop­er­ties are be­ing up­graded.

Is­land Park in Alexan­dria is a great place to re­lax. Take a dip in Mill Pond, lounge on the beach, stroll along the path­way, watch the res­i­dent flock of Canada geese, have a pic­nic. Chil­dren of all ages can cool off in the splash park. After you have worked up an ap­petite, check out the wide va­ri­ety of bars, bistros, snack bars and restau­rants that serve up di­verse menus that are bound to please ev­ery­one.

At farm­ers’ mar­kets, con­sumers can make a con­nec­tion with pro­duc­ers.

The ex­pe­ri­ence will stim­u­late the lo­ca­vore in you. Meet the peo­ple who put baked goods, cheeses, fruits, veg­eta­bles and bread on your ta­ble.

For a taste of his­tory, War of 1812 re-en­act­ments are staged at the Glen­garry Pioneer Mu­seum in Dun­ve­gan in the fall.

Pa­rades are or­ga­nized in lo­cal com­mu­ni­ties on Canada Day, at Christ­mas and dur­ing win­ter car­ni­vals.
