Once a year, North Glengarry hosts a day when residents can safely dispose of their household hazardous waste.
The 2015 drop-off day will be held April 25 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the R.A.R.E. Plant, 265 Industrial Blvd., Alexandria.
Household hazardous waste includes pesticides, medication and syringes, antifreeze and its containers, propane cylinders, cleaning fluids, propane tanks, batteries, oven and drain cleaners, fluorescent lights, fire extinguishers, lawn fertilizers, paints, solvents and oil.
Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is another large component in the recyclable waste stream. WEEE can be reused, refurbished and recycled. In North Glengarry, unwanted electronic and electrical equipment can be dropped off at the RARE plant, from Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and at the Glen Robertson Landfill, 3485 Dalhousie St., County Road 23, Glen Robertson, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon. The list of products that can be disposed of in this fashion includes television sets, display devices, computers and peripherals, printers, telephones, cellular devices, speakers, audio and video devices. The annual large item pick-up will take place the week of May 25. For the do-it-yourselfer, free access to landfill site days will be held May 23, May 26 and May 30 at the Beaver Brook site and May 30 at the North Lancaster dump.
The next hazardous household waste and WEEE day is Saturday, September 19, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Smithfield Park, 119 Military Rd., Lancaster.
