Big names, personal touch

Among the hotter items at Chico & Jo Trophies and Sportswear in Alexandria are softshell jackets.

“We sell a lot of those coats as well as work wear,” says Gérard Gareau. He and his wife, Johanne, have been operating the Main Street business for the past 32 years.

Because it also has an embroidery shop, Chico & Jo can add a personal touch to its lines of clothing.

Customized garb is also very popular, adds Mrs. Gareau. In fact, one company ordered no less than 1,300 embroidered jackets.

“We worked a month a half, 12-13 hours seven days a week, to complete that order,” she says. “But when it is your own business, you never count your hours.” Working with machines that can perform 1,200 stitches a minute, Mrs. Gareau can put almost any image or message on a shirt, jacket or cap. If customers cannot find what they want in a catalogue of 2,000 designs, they can have their own unique images created on garments.

The store also offers lines of trophies, plaques, medals, as well as giftware, sportswear and promotional items. All of their products can be customized.
