Experience an escape at Auld Kirktown

Shannon MacCuaig, owner of Auld Kirktown Gift and Home Décor Shoppe in South Lancaster, notes that, ”At its core, shopping local supports the businesses who sponsor and support events and activities in the community where you live, work and play. Not to mention keeping your tax dollars in your own community.”

“Since its inception 30 plus years ago, AK has been known for tastefully selected items, displayed in a way to allow the customer to imagine in his/her own space. This is our number one goal. We want people to have an experience of escape when they walk in the door, to dream about how their home could look, affordably. We love hearing how ‘different’ our selection is from other stores,” she says.

“By far our most popular items remain our selection of bedding. I love to hear how many people remark that we're their first stop when redecorating their bedrooms! Our cozy line of bamboo clothing -- leggings, tank tops and now sweaters -- are my favourite thing to take home and to recommend as gifts. They truly are heavenly soft and comfortable to wear.”

As for trends, “I can't speak to how people’s tastes have changed over the years, but I can attest to how different the game of retail is. I think ‘cheap and cheerful’ is everywhere and available in every big box store. Online shopping has changed the retail experience to eliminate human interaction and customer relationships. And that's OK. I'm open to the challenge of finding ‘different’ quality, well-priced merchandise and evolving along with the technological changes. We're currently building our own e-commerce website, but I like to think there is still room for a balance of ‘online’ and ‘brick and mortar’ in retail,” she writes.

“People work hard for their money and deserve to walk into an establishment which truly appreciates their business. Hopefully that's the experience we give them.”
