Le Relais in training
BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor Les Rapides got in some home- ice exhibition hockey action last Friday afternoon, skating at the Billy Gebbie Arena in Alexandria against a squad from Le Sommet.
Le Relais, fresh off its tier II title in Prescott-Russell league play, is methodically preparing for next month’s Tournoi Franco-Ontarien, which will be held in Mississauga.
The annual hockey tournament for teams from the province’s French- language high schools is a maintstay of the sports calendar at Le Relais, whose teams have garnered a raft of medals under the leadership of head coach Dominic Decoeur.
The March 6 contest saw Les Rapides prevail 7-3.
Phil Veilleux carried the hot stick, scoring a hat trick. Dylan Seguin had four points (1 goal, 3 assists), as did Pierre- Luc Sabourin (4 assists). Mathieu Sabourin notched three points (1 goal, 2 assists).
Other point- getters were Brandon Lauzon (3A), Pascal Theoret (1G), Nicholas Dupuis (1G), and Kieran Devine (1A).
Both netminders, Michaël Deguire and Nicolas Rousseau, saw action between the pipes.
The Franco scoring system allots points for winning a game, winning a period, and playing the game with discipline, all up to a maximum of 15 points for a game.
Under this system, Les Rapides would have done quite well too. The only period the squad didn’t win was the second – they tied that. And they were flagged with just three minor penalties. Le Relais would have earned 14 points.
Coach Decoeur notes that in past years the staff has stressed this with players, but he says this time around they are focusing on fundamentals and simply winning games. The rest, he believes, will take care of itself. Of course, the key will be to remain disciplined and stay out of the sin bin.
The squad is practising once a week through March and will step that up to twice in April.
Les Rapides will play an exhibition game in Hawkesbury and compete in the pre-Franco tournament, also in Hawkesbury, on March 27.
This year’s Tournoi FrancoOntarien is set for April 14-16.
