Wild nabs championship
The Eastern Ontario Wild major peewee ‘AAA’ hockey team claimed the OEMHL championship on Monday night in Ottawa, with a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Junior 67’s.
Dunvegan’s Joe Vrebetic was between the pipes to backstop the series-clinching victory.
The Wild trailed into the second period, when Yanik Crete scored to tie, set up by Tristan Turpin who found the back of the net early in the third to give the Wild a lead they would not relinquish. Mason
Carter earned the helper on the play.
With just under 11 minutes remaining in the game, Alexandros Rossides potted what would be the game- winning marker, assisted by Patryk Kosttrzewa and William Fitzsimmons. Ottawa added a late one to round out the scoring.
The championship series opened March 16 in Casselman, where the Wild skated to a 4-2 win. The squad followed that up three days later in Ottawa, with a 2-1 victory and then a 2-2 tie in Casselman on March 21.
That draw gave Ottawa what would be the only point of the series for the 67’s, as Eastern Ontario took the crown with seven points.
The team is coached by Carl Robillard.
Next up is the provincial championship tournament, slated for April 6-10 in Aliston, north of Toronto.
THE GANG: Coaches and players gather around the Vanier Cup, at the beginning of a March 21 workout at the dome. The session featured CIS coaches, along with those from the Glengarry Gaels football club, and capped off a winter of indoor training, as the Gaels get ready for the upcoming spring outdoor season.
