Hearts U14 girls score ERSL crown
BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor The Glengarry Hearts U14 girls soccer team is tops in the region, having recently clinched the East Region Soccer League championship.
The team, with its perfect record of 11 wins thus far this season, stands in first place with 33 points, 13 more than second place Ottawa Futsal FSTA Elite.
Glengarry prevailed in its final home game on Aug. 30 in Maxville, beating Russell 5-1.
The Hearts controlled much of the first half of play, scoring four times. The icing came late in the second half with a successful penalty kick that sailed over the Russell goalkeeper’s hands, under the bar, and in.
Credited with goals for the victorious side were Ella Bowles (2), Nevynn Witteveen, Erika Leroux, and Leslie Papps.
Over 11 games played this season, the Hearts have allowed just nine goals, while scoring 32.
Mei Le Cumming is the team’s (and league’s) top goal scorer, having found the back of the opposing net 11 times.
Mackinnley MacKillican has recorded three shutouts for her team and sits third in the league.
Reflecting on what the Hearts have accomplished this summer, coach Steve Reed says, “We had a lot of fun this year, and it was really nice to end the season with such a great record. The team worked extremely well together, and every game we improved. In the end, every goal earned and every goal saved involved the entire team.”
Their season is set to wrap up on the road, with a Sept. 6 match against Ottawa Futsal.
