Hearts U14 girls score ERSL crown

BY SEAN BRAY Sports Edi­tor The Glen­garry Hearts U14 girls soc­cer team is tops in the re­gion, hav­ing re­cently clinched the East Re­gion Soc­cer League cham­pi­onship.

The team, with its per­fect record of 11 wins thus far this sea­son, stands in first place with 33 points, 13 more than sec­ond place Ot­tawa Fut­sal FSTA Elite.

Glen­garry pre­vailed in its fi­nal home game on Aug. 30 in Maxville, beat­ing Rus­sell 5-1.

The Hearts con­trolled much of the first half of play, scor­ing four times. The ic­ing came late in the sec­ond half with a suc­cess­ful penalty kick that sailed over the Rus­sell goal­keeper’s hands, un­der the bar, and in.

Cred­ited with goals for the vic­to­ri­ous side were Ella Bowles (2), Nevynn Wit­teveen, Erika Ler­oux, and Les­lie Papps.

Over 11 games played this sea­son, the Hearts have al­lowed just nine goals, while scor­ing 32.

Mei Le Cum­ming is the team’s (and league’s) top goal scorer, hav­ing found the back of the op­pos­ing net 11 times.

Mackinn­ley MacKil­li­can has recorded three shutouts for her team and sits third in the league.

Re­flect­ing on what the Hearts have ac­com­plished this sum­mer, coach Steve Reed says, “We had a lot of fun this year, and it was re­ally nice to end the sea­son with such a great record. The team worked ex­tremely well to­gether, and ev­ery game we im­proved. In the end, ev­ery goal earned and ev­ery goal saved in­volved the en­tire team.”

Their sea­son is set to wrap up on the road, with a Sept. 6 match against Ot­tawa Fut­sal.
