Celtics take title in GSL tier 2 men

BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor The Celtics are the 2017 Glengarry Soccer League tier 2 men’s division playoff champion, having won the final series in a two-game sweep of Greenfield.

Despite the outcome, the title was indeed a battle on the pitch, as the fact that the first half of each game saw the Celtics held off the scoresheet. The Blue Shirts, each time, though, found their legs in the second half.

After taking game one back on Sept. 4 with a 3-1 effort, the Celtics were on the field in Alexandria on Monday night, looking to don the crown.

And that’s just what they did, despite a gritty performance from Team Red.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Celtics were awarded a free kick just outside the goalbox, and Jason Kilger made no mistake with the opportunity, capitalizing for the game’s first tally.

Greenfield, undaunted, pushed the play from there, mounting attack after attack, only to the thwarted.

At the 80-minute mark, Eric Bergeron finished off a cross to make it 2-0 Blue.

Rhys Paquette eventually added a late insurance tally, breaking through the Greenfield defence to elude goalkeeper Donald Dashney, who, on the night, made many a fine save.

The Celtics won the match 3-0, backstopped by Brendan Ried.

To reach the best-of-three final series, the Celtics dispatched Glen Nevis in the semifinal round, while Greenfield upset the second- place McCrimmon Combines in the other series.

During the regular season, the Celtics topped the four-team table, with a record of 6 wins, 4 ties, and 2 losses.

McCrimmon was 5-3-4, followed by Greenfield at 3-4-5 and Glen Nevis with a 3-3-6 record.

Noteworthy within the division is the fact that no team dominated this season, with just 10 points separating top from bottom.

McCrimmon led the season in shutouts, as three of their 12 matches ended with a goose egg on the opposing side of the ledger.

No GSL awards are presented in the division. However, says Celtics chieftain Lothar Schareina, if there was an MVP trophy, it should go to Jason Kilger.

INTENSITY: Paul Rother, of the Celtics tier 2 men’s soccer team, fends off the challenge of Greenfield’s Lindsay MacCulloch, in game two of the GSL finals.
