D DAY: Troops of the Stor­mont, Dun­das, and Glen­garry High­landers go­ing ashore from LCI 299, Bernières-sur-mer, Nor­mandy, France, June 6, 1944. The High­landers orig­i­nated in Corn­wall, where July 3, 1868, the 59th Stor­mont and Glen­garry Bat­tal­ion of In­fantry was formed. Fight­ing in ev­ery ma­jor con­flict, in­clud­ing the Fe­nian Raids and The Great War of 1914-1981, the reg­i­ment landed on D Day as part of the 9th In­fantry Bri­gade, 3rd Cana­dian In­fantry Divi­sion, and it con­tin­ued to fight in North West Europe un­til the end of the war. The overseas bat­tal­ion was dis­banded Jan­uary 15, 1946.
