Crusaders capture crown
It’s been quite the season on the volleyball court for the junior boys team from Char-Lan DHS.
Following a first-place finish in the regular season, the Crusaders cruised to the ‘A’ playoff title, in the tournament they hosted on Nov. 7.
The final match pitted CharLan against North Dundas, the second seed.
From the outset, the host squad took charge, opening a 10-4 lead in the first set, much to the delight of the students jammed into the stands to cheer on the players.
The Devils fought back, getting within 3 points, before Char-Lan turned on the heat again, taking the set 25-12.
The second game was close early on, until a strong service game from Jake Vanderburg allowed the Crusaders to build a 7-point advantage.
Char-Lan went on to win the set 25-18, capturing the playoff championship.
Coach Clem DiStefano, on his team’s success, says “The boys were very consistent all year, dropping only 2 sets of 24. I think what helped us win was our consistency at the service line and the ability to transition from defence to offence by getting the ball to our setters (Nick Oeggerli and Nathaniel Faubert) so that our power hitters (Vanderburg, Aiden Leroux, and Jack Cayer) could attack.
The Crusaders this week will compete at EOSSAA, scheduled for today, Nov. 15, in Elgin.
