North Glen­garry Town­ship holds its an­nual busi­ness and com­mu­nity awards gala on Thurs­day, Sept. 27, at the Glen­garry Sports Palace. Tick­ets for the event are $45 each and can be pur­chased by con­tact­ing Chloe Crack at 613-662-2765. Cock­tails at 6 p.m. is pleased to pub­lish de­tails about four of the award re­cip­i­ents who will be hon­oured that evening. We will pub­lish de­tails on the other four win­ners next week.

Carol Scott Bell­ware Life­time Achieve­ment

For 26 years, Carol Bell­ware has ded­i­cated count­less hours of vol­un­teer work for the Glen­garry Memo­rial Hos­pi­tal, the Hos­pi­tal Foun­da­tion and many more ac­tiv­i­ties. To this day, she con­tin­ues her vol­un­teer work as Di­rec­tor for Glen­garry En­core Ed­u­ca­tion.

Carol started vol­un­teer­ing at the age of 11 for the Boys and Girls Club and con­tin­ued to vol­un­teer for Point St. Charles Boys and Girls Club, High School for Girls Stu­dents Fundrais­ing, Bell Tele­phone Co. Vol­un­teer, Christ­mas Bas­ket Fund, Girl Guides of Canada, Boy Scouts of Canada, Glen­garry Chap­ter of the Heart and Stroke Golf Com­mit­tee, Chil­dren's Hos­pi­tal of Eastern On­tario, Alexan­dria Cham­ber of Com­merce and many more. Only three months af­ter mov­ing to On­tario in 1992, she as­sumed the du­ties of Gift Shop Buyer at the HGMH and has been ful­fill­ing th­ese re­spon­si­bil­i­ties for the past 17 years. She has been an ac­tive mem­ber of the Aux­il­iary's Ex­ec­u­tive Com­mit­tee and dur­ing her term as Pres­i­dent, she served as a mem­ber of the Glen­garry Memo­rial Hos­pi­tal Board.

Doreen Howes Se­nior Of The Year

Doreen is known as an event plan­ner. She has or­ga­nized a va­ri­ety of fundrais­ing con­certs for CHEO and Ron­ald MacDon­ald House. She works tire­lessly for the Clan Ma­cLeod So­ci­ety and has or­ga­nized the pop­u­lar Jan­uary curl­ing day, July pic­nic and Septem­ber golf day. She is in­stru­men­tal in or­ga­niz­ing a Ma­cLeod booth at the High­land Games.

The Kirkin' ‘O’ the Tar­tan, a well-loved an­nual event at St. Columba Church the Sun­day af­ter the High­land Games also owes much of its suc­cess to Doreen.

When there is a com­mu­nity need, Doreen al­ways steps for­ward and takes the reins to or­ga­nize the date, time, mu­sic, and lunch. Just this past year she heard that Dalkeith Recre­ation Hall needed bet­ter acous­tics so she planned a St. Pa­trick's Day party with Ir­ish en­ter­tain­ment. She raised $1,400.

Journé de la Femme Com­mu­nity Ser­vice Award

La Journée de la Femme est une groupe qui ex­iste depuis 10 ans et tra­vaille tous bénév­ole­ment pour une très bonne cause: acheter des équipements pour le con­fort des pa­tients de l’Hôpi­tal Glen­garry Memo­rial Hos­pi­tal. La Journée de la Femme, qui a lieu a l'école sec­ondaire catholique Le Re­lais, of­fre une journée pleines d'ac­tiv­ités avec plus de 90 kiosques, nour­ri­t­ure, un en­can si­len­cieux, des dé­filés de mode, bingo, tirage 50/50, prix de présence et plus. Des pièces d’équipement avec une valeur de plus de 130 000 $ d'équipement ont été achetés jusqu’à main­tenant. Ce groupe est telle­ment ap­pré­cié par la com­mu­nauté que les gens en par­lent douze mois par an­née et ont hâte à l'an prochain. Des as­so­ci­a­tions font main­tenant des dons pour aider ce groupe car les dons vont di­recte­ment pour l'équipement pour les pa­tients. Ce groupe est très bien or­gan­isé et tout se déroule avec des ex­cel­lents ré­sul­tats. Félic­i­ta­tions!

Ul­tra­mar – Busi­ness of the Year

Ul­tra­mar is a modern and vis­i­ble busi­ness on Alexan­dria’s Main Street that serves hun­dreds of cus­tomers daily.

That is the re­sult of com­mit­ment, ded­i­ca­tion and hard work. The busi­ness con­sists of a gas sta­tion, touch­less car wash, a propane re­fill cen­tre and Ex­press mart.

Cur­rently the busi­ness has six em­ploy­ees and of­fers com­pet­i­tive gas prices. Mr. Im­ran Ba­jwa is the spirit be­hind it. He bought this property in 2012. The property re­quired huge in­vest­ment and Mr. Ba­jwa pro­vided all that along with us­ing his in­dus­try ex­per­tise.
