BY SEAN BRAY Sports Editor Last weekend’s CommUNITY Run in Alexandria was all about increasing awareness of diversity, inclusion, and unity, explains lead organizer Sophie Ranger.

“It was nice to see people from the community encouraging and supporting runners on the course,” she adds.

As an inclusive event, Ranger notes, “Clients supported by Community Living Glengarry were out walking [or] riding in the Duet bikes purchased with last year’s donations. Others were on the course cheering on runners.”

Ranger says that the proceeds from the 2018 edition of the race, one that saw 406 register for participation, with 374 running one of the three distances – 1 km, 5 km, or 10 km – will be used to buy a recumbent bike for the outdoor gym facility being installed at Island Park.

Glen Campbell served as emcee of this year’s event, with road courses starting from and finished at Alexandria’s sports dome.

Cornwall resident Eric Neilsen won the 10 km race, with a time of 36 minutes, 35.9 seconds. Green Valley’s Jeff Lapierre was second (37:54.8).

The top female finisher was Lapierre’s daughter, Brooke, who crossed the finish line at 45:20.5. Lynne Giroux was the runner-up, just under two minutes later.

On the 5 km course, Alexandria’s Keegan Filion breezed to victory, checking in at 17 minutes, 5.6 seconds. Top female was Michelle Gordon, also of Alexandria. She finished in 21:23.5.

Sophie Ranger, on behalf of the organizing group, expresses her thanks to all sponsors, volunteers, “voluncheers,” and participants, who included individuals from local schools, sports teams, businesses, and organizations.

“After the run,” she adds, “I could hear people making plans to go have a cup of coffee or breakfast with friends and family members. I smiled because the run was bringing people together and bringing conversations away from the dome and [into] our local cafés and restaurants.”

It’s noteworthy that in each of the three races, the number of women running topped the men, with the largest disparity – 155 to 85 – in the 5 k.
