Surrounded by his loving family, Dale passed away peacefully on November 9, 2018 in his 75th year, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by Sharon, his spouse for over 50 years; his son, Clinton; and daughter, Andrea (Franco); as well as his sister, Clare (Jack, d. 2011); brother, Neil (Shirley); nephew, Bryan; and niece, Leanna (Jesse). He was a wonderful partner, father, brother and uncle, friend, teacher and a great role model for the importance of family, good values, education and sports, especially golf.
Dale was born in Trail, B.C. to Frederick and Edna Orr. The family moved to Oliver, then Kitimat in 1956 where he met Sharon and they quickly became best friends for life. He received his BA in economics at the University of Washington and his PhD at Northwestern University in Chicago, where Dale and Sharon were married. His career spanned academia (assistant professor of economics at the University of British Columbia), 10 years in the federal government in Ottawa in senior economist and executive positions, as well as the private sector. He was Chief Economist at Bell Canada for 10 years, managing director of Canadian operations for an international economics consulting firm for 10 years in Ottawa and Toronto and ran his own successful economics consulting firm for many years. A former colleague summarized Dale’s professional contribution as follows... “Thank you Dale for everything you have done to help advance and inform the thoughtful discussion of economics and business issues in our country.”
