UPEI field hockey team drops game to West­ern On­tario

Huskies rally for women’s hockey win

HAMIL­TON — The UPEI Pan­thers lost 6-0 to the West­ern On­tario Mus­tangs in quar­ter-fi­nal action Fri­day at the On­tario Uni­ver­sity Ath­let­ics field hockey cham­pi­onship.

The Pan­thers are the At­lantic Uni­ver­sity Sport rep­re­sen­ta­tive in the tour­na­ment. They are also the Mar­itime league cham­pi­ons.

In the other quar­ter-fi­nal game Fri­day, Water­loo edged York 1-0.

UPEI and York will play in the con­so­la­tion game this morn­ing.

Water­loo will play No. 1 seed Guelph and West­ern will take on No. 2 Toronto in semi­fi­nal action tonight.

The medal games are on Sun­day, with the two fi­nal­ists ad­vanc­ing to the CIS cham­pi­onship, Nov. 5-8, in Vic­to­ria, B.C.


HAL­I­FAX — The Saint Mary’s Huskies ral­lied from an early two-goal deficit to beat the UPEI Pan­thers 5-2 in At­lantic Uni­ver­sity Sport women’s hockey action Fri­day night.

UPEI dropped to 2-2-0 with the loss.

Scor­ing for the Huskies (4-1-0) were Kyla Thurston, with two goals, Re­becca Mosher, Carla Lit­tle and Lauren McCusker.

Genna Phe­lan and Amanda Arm­strong (1-1) scored 16 sec­onds apart early in the first perod to give the Pan­thers a 2-0 lead. Suzanne Cor­tilet drew an as­sist.

UPEI led 2-1 af­ter the first and trailed 4-2 af­ter the sec­ond.

The Huskies out­shot the Pan­thers 31-29 in the con­test.

Goal­tenders were Bai­ley Toupin (UPEI) and Jil­lian MacIsaac (SMU).

UPEI is at Dal­housie and St. F.X. next week­end.
