The Guardian (Charlottetown) - - SPORTS -

Four teams are vying for the opportunity to represent Prince Edward Island at the Canadian bantam baseball championships in Vaughan, Ont., in August.

The first step is to win the Baseball P.E.I. bantam AAA eliminations this weekend at Legends Field in Summerside.

All four teams in the Baseball P.E.I. Bantam AAA League are competing in the tournament, which starts Friday night.

“It’s a close league,” said Allison Macdonald, director of bantam competitions at Baseball P.E.I.

“These four teams are strong one through 12. It’s not a stretch to say that any one of these teams could win this tournament if they put it all together this weekend.

“This should be some of the best baseball being played on P.E.I. this summer.”

Charlottetown is heading into the eliminations with a 5-0 league record, followed by MidIsle (3-2), Summerside (2-3) and Cardigan (0-5).

Charlottetown’s five wins include three decided by two runs or fewer.

The Summerside Chevys represented P.E.I. last year at the nationals.

This year’s Canadian championships are set for Aug. 20 to 24.

The following is schedule for the provincial elimination tournament:
