The P.E.I. WI board awarded schol­ar­ships within the past few weeks and is now gear­ing up for a busy sum­mer with prepa­ra­tions for the an­nual Hand­craft, Hor­ti­cul­ture and Arts Show dur­ing Old Home Week.

Plans for fall events are also well un­der­way.

P.E.I. WI re­cently awarded two schol­ar­ships. The PEIWI Ed­u­ca­tion Schol­ar­ship for 2015 was awarded to Jas­mine Frizzell of North Winsloe while the Louise MacMil­lan Me­mo­rial Schol­ar­ship was awarded to Mor­gan Paige Mac­Don­ald from York. Both are stu­dents at the Univer­sity of Prince Ed­ward Is­land. The board ex­tends best wishes to the win­ners and all ap­pli­cants in their con­tin­ued stud­ies.

The P.E.I. Women’s In­sti­tute re­minds all stu­dents there are sev­eral schol­ar­ships of­fered through­out the year. The next op­por­tu­nity is for the He­len Her­ring Schol­ar­ship for stu­dents en­ter­ing their third year univer­sity. Dead­line is Sept. 30; de­tails are avail­able online at www.peiw.ca.

Old Home Week is slated for Aug. 13-22, and Is­lan­ders are in­vited to sub­mit en­tries to the WI Hand­craft, Hor­ti­cul­ture and Art Show. Var­i­ous classes in art, crafts, food, flow­ers, pho­tog­ra­phy and veg­eta­bles can be en­tered and will be on dis­play dur­ing the Is­land’s top ex­hi­bi­tion. The dead­line to register is July 25. Ad­di­tional de­tails are online at www.peiwi.ca.

A va­ri­ety of demon­stra­tions will again take place this year be­gin­ning on Aug. 17 and will run through to Aug. 22. Demon­stra­tions in­clude origami, re­cy­cling, knit­ting, glass etch­ing, felt art, wood carv­ing and card mak­ing. A com­plete and de­tailed list will be avail­able online and on site. Also, in­cluded will be rug hook­ing.

Is­land Mat­ters rug hook­ing group will be hold­ing a hand­son ac­tiv­ity, Aug. 13-16, noon to 9 p.m.

Vol­un­teers are still needed dur­ing the Hand­craft, Hor­ti­cul­ture and Art Show of Old Home Week. Stu­dents need­ing vol­un­teers hours are also en­cour­aged to sign up. To vol­un­teer, con­tact Doreen Wall at 902-388-2564 or yel­low­bird67@out­look.com.

Vol­un­teers are also needed for the first ever WI Ac­tive Like a Girl Walk Run event to be held Oct, 10. Watch for de­tails on this fall fun event and or con­tact the WI of­fice for fur­ther in­for­ma­tion.

Fall work­shop dates fo­cus­ing on learn­ing how to make overnight French bread, clean­ing us­ing green prac­tices and a fall craft theme have also been set.

Evening work­shops will be held on Oct. 21 in Welling­ton, Oct. 27 in Char­lot­te­town and Oct. 29 in Ver­non River. Ad­di­tional de­tails will be avail­able soon.

The PEIWI board of di­rec­tors wishes all a healthy and re­lax­ing sum­mer and en­cour­ages peo­ple to join in phys­i­cal fit­ness ac­tiv­i­ties. Also, check out the na­tional pro­ject for July: Take 10 for “Grow­ing a Health­ier You” at www.fwic.ca.
