Woods replacing Gruber as Morell Sportsman’s Dinner’s guest
Original Toronto Blue Jay Al Woods will be pinch hitting as the special guest at this year’s Morell Sportsman’s Dinner.
The announcement was made Thursday after former Jay Kelly Gruber, who was to handle the duties, informed the organizing committee he was unable to attend due to a family matter.
Woods had a seven-year career in the majors. Originally drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1971, Woods signed with the Minnesota Twins in 1972 and went to the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1976 expansion draft. He homered as a pinch hitter in his and the Jays’ first ever major league game.
Woods will also be conducting a skills clinic for a group of eight and nine year olds, in conjunction with Baseball P.E.I., the afternoon before the dinner.
The dinner, organized by the Northside Communities Initiative committee will be held at Morell High School on Saturday, July 18, at 6 p.m.
The volunteer committee is raising funds to replace the aging Morell rink with a multi-purpose venue to serve communities from Scotchfort to St. Peter’s Bay.
Tickets are still available at $100 per person. Contact Kipper Doyle at 902-313-0068 for further information.
