The Charlottetown Festival has announced that Elmira, Ont., native Jay Davis will play the male hero in Ted Dykstra’s epic love story, being mounted in both Charlottetown and Edmonton this fall.

When making its world premiere here at the festival in 2013, the musical drew critical acclaim from The Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, and many more and is now being re-staged as a partnership with Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre.

Directed by the Citadel’s artistic director, Bob Baker, this all-Canadian production will play a four-week run on P.E.I. before moving to Edmonton for three weeks.

Josée Boudreau, a veteran of both the Charlottetown Festival and Citadel Theatre, was announced earlier this season as Evangeline, the title heroine who is torn apart from both Gabriel and her homeland during the Acadian Deportation from Grand Pré, N.S.

"I am very excited to finally work with Jay," says Baker.

"He has just the right combination of strength, vulnerability, humour and passion to play Gabriel. He has a beautiful, rich singing voice and he and Josée will make a stunning couple."

Davis starred as Dracula in the Charlottetown Festival’s 2003 hit "Dracula: A Chamber Musical", and recently in "Beauty and the Beast" (Drayton) and "Assassin"s (Talk is Free/Birdland). He is also currently performing in the world premiere of the comedy "Bittergirl - The Musical" at the festival’s Mack theatre.

"I am overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude to be returning to the Charlottetown Festival for Adam Brazier’s inaugural season at the helm," says Davis.

"Being involved in Evangeline is akin to representing Canada in the Olympics. I am honoured and proud to be a part of this beautiful and moving new Canadian musical."

The musical love story begins previews Sept. 14 in Charlottetown and runs until Oct. 10, beginning again Saturday, Oct. 31 in Edmonton. For tickets or more information, visit confederationcentre.com or citadeltheatre.com.
