Reds heading to Massachusetts tournament
The Scotiabank Reds hit the road today for a tournament in Massachusetts.
The under-18 girls softball team is using it to prepare for the Canadian championships in Montreal from Aug. 2 to 9.
The Reds are the only Canadian team in this weekend’s 31team All-American Challenge in Lowell.
“To go up against the best competition from the Eastern district of the (United States) will be a great challenge for our squad,” said manager Jordan Ellis.
The Reds play twice Friday before attending a Red Sox game with the Detroit Tigers. They have three games Saturday with the playoffs set for Sunday.
“We cannot wait for Lowell, as this will be great preparation before nationals,” said co-captain Hope Higginbotham.
The team has won all three of the tournaments it has entered this summer and are coming off a 7-6 win over the Island Impact, Prince Edward Island’s senior women’s team.
“This was the fifth time we have played them this summer. After them winning the first four, we were happy to get a win before we go to Lowell,” said cocaptain Laura Ready.
Scotiabank Reds pitcher Alyssa Fleming throws a pitch during action earlier this year.
