The Guardian (Charlottetown) - - WEEKEND BUSINESS -

Loblaw Companies Ltd. won’t say whether any of its stores in P.E.I. will be closed.

The company said Thursday it will close 52 locations in the coming year across Canada.

In an email to The Guardian late Thursday it is not saying yet what locations are affected.

In its latest annual report, the company had more than 2,300 locations for its many brands, including Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, No Frills and Joe Fresh.

“Out of respect for our many stakeholders, including colleagues, vendors, landlords and others, we are not disclosing specific locations at this time,’’ Bob Chant, senior vice-president of corporate affairs and communication for Loblaw public relations, said in the email.

Chant said out of the 2,300 locations, the company has identified “52 consistently underperforming and unprofitable stores that we will close’’.

The list includes gas bars, Joe Fresh stand-alone stores and select pharmacies and grocery stores.
