Bike ride set for Aug. 2

Lloyd McLean is plan­ning a spe­cial bike ride across P.E.I. for Aug. 2.

The P.E.I. Big Bike Ride is not a fundraiser, it is an event to raise aware­ness of the im­por­tance for all Cana­di­ans to in­cor­po­rate sus­tain­able ac­tiv­ity into their daily lifestyle.

The ride will fol­low the Con­fed­er­a­tion Trail from Tignish to Elmira on a fat tire bike.

The to­tal dis­tance is 273.4 kms, and it is ex­pected to take 14 hours to com­plete.

Ma­cLean will start in Tignish at 6 a.m. on Aug. 2 and with an ex­pected av­er­age speed of 20 kms/hour will fin­ish in Elmira at around 8 p.m.

In 2013, Ma­cLean bi­cy­cled across Canada, cov­er­ing 8,200 kms in 85 days. His dad died due to com­pli­ca­tions from de­men­tia in 2012 and this ride is in mem­ory of his fa­ther.

Ev­ery year the num­ber of Cana­di­ans clas­si­fied as obese in­creases.

In ad­di­tion, ev­ery year the num­ber of Cana­di­ans di­rectly or in­di­rectly im­pacted by Alzheimers in­creases.
