Martin Sobey had the bestever finish for P.E.I. at the Canadian junior triathlon championships on Saturday.
Sobey has been climbing the junior ranks all season and came out of the water just behind the lead group.
Working extremely hard with another athlete, they broke away from the chase group on the bike and caught the lead pack.
Martin led a tight group of 10 going into the run, and pushed hard despite some minor health challenges to finish a close fifth.
“The race in Magog shows that Martin is becoming an experienced, intelligent and very determined competitor, who is not to be overlooked now or in years to come,” said Kara Grant, his Island triathlon coach and program advisor.
“His talent, dedication and hard work, combined with keen intelligence and cool head under pressure, make him an ideal triathlete.”
Sobey prepared for the national championships with a month of vigorous training and competition in Spain with some of the top Canadian juniors.
Sobey was also scheduled to race in the missed team relay on Sunday.
His next Canadian Series event will be in Kelowna, B.C., on Aug. 22.
