P.E.I. Ju­niors nearly make clean sweep of Mud­cats

Is­land squad wins three straight af­ter drop­ping open­ing game

The P.E.I. Ju­niors took threeof-four games from the Metro Mud­cats in N.B. Ju­nior Base­ball League home-and-home dou­ble­header ac­tion in Monc­ton, N.B., and Cornwall over the week­end.

P.E.I. dropped the open­ing game 5-1 then picked up 6-4, 53 and 7-3 wins over the next three games.

The Ju­niors (9-13) moved into a fourth-place tie with the Saint John Pi­rates.

In Sun­day’s night­cap in Cornwall, Sam Walsh en­tered in the first in­ning af­ter an ejec­tion and shut down Metro bat­ters the rest of the way, not al­low­ing any runs and giv­ing up four hits while strik­ing out four in a 7-3 win. Walsh also dou­bled in a run.

Jed Noo­nan and Nick MacPhail each picked up two hits while Sam Lund added a pair of hits for the Mud­cats.

Ear­lier Sun­day, P.E.I. scored three runs in the fifth in­ning and Brad Power added a tworun sin­gle in the sixth en route to a 5-3 vic­tory.

Nathan McInnis puz­zled Metro hit­ters all game, scat­ter­ing three hits in a com­pletegame per­for­mance. His only blem­ish was sur­ren­der­ing a two-run home run to Mitchell Ha­zlett in the sev­enth.

MacPhail, Con­nor My­ers and Spencer Horne each added a pair of hits.

Jack­son Dekker pitched the com­plete game for the Mud­cats.

In Game 2 on Satur­day in Monc­ton, Brady Arse­nault re­cov­ered from a three-run first in­ning for the win al­low­ing just two hits over the next five in­nings.

MacPhail picked up the save in the 6-4 vic­tory.

P.E.I. cap­i­tal­ized on four Mud­cat er­rors in the third by scor­ing five runs.

Lo­gan Gallant had three hits and My­ers added two.

Dekker whacked a homer for Monc­ton. Los­ing pitcher was Chris Mar­coux.

In Satur­day’s first game, the Mud­cats rode Lund’s pitch­ing to a 5-1 vic­tory.

Lund raised his record to 3-01 and low­ered his league lead­ing earned-run av­er­age to 0.68 af­ter al­low­ing three hits while strik­ing out seven in the com­pletegame per­for­mance.

Metro’s Shawn Bart­ley led the Mud­cats of­fence, go­ing a 2-for3 per­for­mance with two runs scored.

P.E.I.’s Spencer Horne took the loss, giv­ing up nine hits and four walks. He struck out seven bat­ters.

Gallant, My­ers and Nick MacPhail had the P.E.I. hits.

P.E.I. closes the reg­u­lar sea­son against the Fred­er­ic­ton Roy­als in a dou­ble­header Satur­day in Cornwall. Game 1 start time is 1 p.m.
