P.E.I. Juniors nearly make clean sweep of Mudcats
Island squad wins three straight after dropping opening game
The P.E.I. Juniors took threeof-four games from the Metro Mudcats in N.B. Junior Baseball League home-and-home doubleheader action in Moncton, N.B., and Cornwall over the weekend.
P.E.I. dropped the opening game 5-1 then picked up 6-4, 53 and 7-3 wins over the next three games.
The Juniors (9-13) moved into a fourth-place tie with the Saint John Pirates.
In Sunday’s nightcap in Cornwall, Sam Walsh entered in the first inning after an ejection and shut down Metro batters the rest of the way, not allowing any runs and giving up four hits while striking out four in a 7-3 win. Walsh also doubled in a run.
Jed Noonan and Nick MacPhail each picked up two hits while Sam Lund added a pair of hits for the Mudcats.
Earlier Sunday, P.E.I. scored three runs in the fifth inning and Brad Power added a tworun single in the sixth en route to a 5-3 victory.
Nathan McInnis puzzled Metro hitters all game, scattering three hits in a completegame performance. His only blemish was surrendering a two-run home run to Mitchell Hazlett in the seventh.
MacPhail, Connor Myers and Spencer Horne each added a pair of hits.
Jackson Dekker pitched the complete game for the Mudcats.
In Game 2 on Saturday in Moncton, Brady Arsenault recovered from a three-run first inning for the win allowing just two hits over the next five innings.
MacPhail picked up the save in the 6-4 victory.
P.E.I. capitalized on four Mudcat errors in the third by scoring five runs.
Logan Gallant had three hits and Myers added two.
Dekker whacked a homer for Moncton. Losing pitcher was Chris Marcoux.
In Saturday’s first game, the Mudcats rode Lund’s pitching to a 5-1 victory.
Lund raised his record to 3-01 and lowered his league leading earned-run average to 0.68 after allowing three hits while striking out seven in the completegame performance.
Metro’s Shawn Bartley led the Mudcats offence, going a 2-for3 performance with two runs scored.
P.E.I.’s Spencer Horne took the loss, giving up nine hits and four walks. He struck out seven batters.
Gallant, Myers and Nick MacPhail had the P.E.I. hits.
P.E.I. closes the regular season against the Fredericton Royals in a doubleheader Saturday in Cornwall. Game 1 start time is 1 p.m.
