TC Media announces Wayne Thibodeau as The Guardian’s new managing editor
Wayne Thibodeau, who has spent more than two decades in journalism in newsrooms across Prince Edward Island, has been named the new managing editor of The Guardian, TC Media has announced.
In addition to taking over the top editorial chair for the iconic Canadian masthead, Thibodeau will serve the wider role of regional editor for Prince Edward Island, which includes responsibility for the Summerside-based Journal-Pioneer.
Thane Burnett, director of content for TC Media, says Thibodeau has a lengthy and rich history in the industry. He was among the vanguard of journalists filing on all platforms, including TV, and started breaking stories for The Guardian as soon as he joined the newsroom as chief political reporter in 1998. He last served as news editor for The Guardian.
“Wayne become a trusted newsroom leader, who knows to doggedly protect the integrity of an important Canadian newsprint legacy while shepherding our local journalism so it can be shared on mobile devices a world away,” Burnett told staff in making the announcement on Tuesday.
Thibodeau said he’s honoured to be taking the lead role of such an important institution, and continuing the tradition of ‘ covering Prince Edward Island like the dew.’
“We have an amazing team of journalists at The Guardian,” said Thibodeau. “I look forward to the future with excitement. We will soon launch a new online and mobile platform that will continue to position The Guardian as the Island’s news leader.
“But that’s just the beginning. We have more exciting changes coming, so stay tuned.”
Burnett said Thibodeau has the right tools and insight at the right time. His appointment is effective immediately. He replaces Gary MacDougall, who retired in June.
“The Guardian has an impressive history of managing editors. I believe Wayne will live up to that lineage, and readers and advertisers will look to him not only to maintain solid local journalism, but also expand and redefine it.”
