Islanders pitcher limits Moncton to two hits in complete-game shutout
Islanders were on the road in Moncton Wednesday night
Charlottetown Islanders pitcher Jacob Beck threw a gem in a New Brunswick Senior Baseball League victory over the Moncton Fisher Cats on Wednesday night.
Beck tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout as the visiting Islanders edged the Fisher Cats 10 at Kiwanis Park.
Sean Corcoran singled home the game’s only run in the top of the sixth inning to lift Charlottetown to the victory.
The Islanders improved their second-place record to 15-9, one-and-a-half games ahead of the third-place Fisher Cats (129).
Charlottetown has won seven of its last nine games while Moncton has won six of its last outings.
Beck (4-2) was masterful on the mound.
He only gave up a single to Kevin Basque in the fourth inning and a single to Mike Ivey in the seventh inning.
Beck, who struck out two batters and walked two over seven innings, limited the Fisher Cats to only five baserunners on the evening.
He got the upper hand over Moncton counterpart Justin Cormier, who was the hard-luck loser on the mound.
Cormier (3-2) went the distance and allowed seven hits, but only one run. He finished with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.
Cormier had retired 11 straight batters until he got into trouble with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. He struck out Morgan MacLean and induced a groundball out from Andrew Macdonald, but then Dillon Doucette belted an offering off the left-field wall for a double.
Doucette advanced to third base on a wild pitch and was then cashed in on Corcoran’s single to right field for the only run the Islanders would need.
Beck retired the side in the bottom of the sixth inning and then closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh. He got groundball outs from New Hampshire import Mike Bisceglia and Andrew Rinzler, before Ivey singled to right field for only Moncton’s second hit of the night.
Josh Dewitt then hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
The Fisher Cats host the Saint John Alpines on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Kiwanis Park.
