Colonels make fi­nal in Sus­sex

The Colonel Gray Colonels lost 76-66 to the Hor­ton Griffins, the top-ranked team in the Mar­itimes, Satur­day in the fi­nal of Dairy Town Clas­sic high school girls bas­ket­ball tour­na­ment in Sus­sex, N.B.

Jenna Mae Ellsworth had 24 points to lead the Colonels while Jada Yeo added 18 in a con­test where they were con­sis­tently dou­bled and even triple teamed. Both made the tour­na­ment all­star team.

It was the third straight year the Colonels have made the fi­nal of the Dairy Town Clas­sic.

The Colonels will get an­other crack at Hor­ton in Fe­bru­ary at the Griffins tour­na­ment in Nova Sco­tia’s An­napo­lis Val­ley.

Colonel Gray started the tour­na­ment by beat­ing the Mi­ramichi Val­ley Pu­lamoo 54-37 with Sophia Blan­chard lead­ing the way with 17, Yeo 16 and Ellsworth 14. They knocked off the Mar­itime’s third-ranked Riverview Roy­als 74-47 be­hind 27 from Yeo and 25 from Ellsworth.

The girls’ third game was against the Griffins, who pulled away late for a 84-66 win. Ellsworth had 40 and Yeo added 18. The Colonels knocked off the sec­ond-ranked team in the Mar­itimes, the Sus­sex High Son­ics, 64-56 in the fi­nal game of round robin to earn a berth in the fi­nal.
