Kallie Culleton-DesRoches received her first kiss, a New Year’s kiss, from her mom after just being welcomed into the world.

Jillian Culleton had the Island’s first baby of 2016 at 12:05 a.m. on Jan. 1.

For Culleton, there was no other way she would have wanted to ring in 2016.

“It was very emotional and exciting,” said the mother of four.

Culleton went into Prince County Hospital in Summerside around 9 p.m.

They were trying to hold me off, she said. They said, ‘We want you to have the New Year’s baby’.”

She was hooked up to monitors, as the nurses kept a close eye on her.

“Then they took me down for my C-section. I wasn’t thinking I was going in to have a New Year’s baby at the time.”

Kallie’s aunt, Chelsea DesRoches, was also in the delivery room.

DesRoches was heading home from a work gathering when she got the call around 10:30 p.m. that her sister-in-law was going to have the baby.

“I called my Mom right after, and she said I was yelling in her ear because I was too excited.”

There was high energy in the hospital room as everyone kept track of the time.

When it was time, it all happened quickly.

“It was too much to put into words. It was one of my best New Year’s.”

Kallie Susan Georgina Culleton-DesRoches weighed 7.6 pounds. Mother and daughter will be able to go home in the next few days.

“It was the best way to celebrate New Year’s,” she said as Kallie slept in her arms.

“It was amazing. It’s an experience of a lifetime that I could never forget.”
