Panthers gain point
St. F.X. needs extra time to defeat UPEI
The St. F.X. hockey teams scored a pair of overtime wins over the UPEI Panthers Friday.
Cory MacIntosh scored 6:32 into overtime as the X-Men defeated the Panthers 5-4 at MacLauchlan Arena while Taylor Dale scored the winner 6:36 into overtime as the host XWomen defeated the Panthers 2-1.
It was the Panthers first games of the second semester of the Atlantic University Sport season.
The men’s Panthers trailed 10 after the first period and 4-0 going to the third.
Brent Andrews scored nine seconds into the final frame and added a power-play goal five minutes later. Beni Berisha, in his first game with the Panthers, made it a one-goal game two minutes later and Ryan MacKinnon tied it with two seconds to play.
Captain Mason Wilgosh had three assists, Marcus Power two while singles went to Andrews, Nick Parker and Craig MacLauchlan.
Eric Locke, Cory MacIntosh, Blake Gal and Craig Duininck scored for the X-Men in regulation. Drew Owsley saves for the win.
Matt Mahalak allowed four goals on 18 shots before being
27 replaced by Mavric Parks to start the third. Parks stopped 10 of 11 shots.
UPEI was 1-for-4 on the power play and St. F.X. was 0-for-2. St. F.X. outshot UPEI 8-2 in overtime.
The X-Men improved to 12-22 while the Panthers are 8-6-2. The Panthers play the Dalhousie Tigers (4-10-2) today at 7 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre as part of the Hockey Day in P.E.I. festivities.
UPEI’s Cassidy McCabe opened the scoring in the women’s game midway through the first period after taking a pass from Teagan Pringle. It was the second-year forward’s first goal of the season.
The goal held up for the visitors until Schyler Campbell scored with 4:33 left in the third period.
Sojung Shin made 37 saves for the win while Marie-Soleil Deschenes made 30 stops in the loss.
UPEI was 0-for-3 on the power play while St. F.X. was 0-for-1.
The X-Women improved to 75-1 while the Panthers are 2-8-3 and host the Mount Allison Mounties (5-7-0) today at 4 p.m. at MacLauchlan Arena.
