P.E.I. un­em­ploy­ment takes drop last month

P.E.I.’s un­em­ploy­ment rate dropped last month as fewer Is­lan­ders looked for work. The lat­est fig­ures from Sta­tis­tics Canada show the un­em­ploy­ment rate dropped to 9.7 per cent in De­cem­ber, which was down from 10.4 per cent the pre­vi­ous month. There were 1,200 fewer peo­ple in the prov­ince’s labour force in De­cem­ber com­pared to Novem­ber. The num­ber of peo­ple work­ing also dropped with P.E.I. see­ing a de­cline of 600 jobs be­tween Novem­ber and De­cem­ber. Most of those de­clines were in full time jobs. Na­tion­ally, the un­em­ploy­ment rate re­mained un­changed at 7.1 per cent. Canada gained 22,800 jobs last month de­spite a drop in the num­ber of full-time jobs. The econ­omy shed 6,400 full-time jobs, but gained 29,200 part-time po­si­tions.
