LEA DIES IN OFFICE
Eighty years ago this week, then Prince Edward Island premier Walter Lea died in office. A farmer and livestock breeder by profession, Lea was born in Tryon on Feb. 10, 1874. He was elected to the P.E.I. legislature in 1915 and became premier in 1930. He lost the next election but was at the helm in 1935 when the Liberals won all 30 seats in the legislature. Lea had been ill during the campaign, however, and died in office on Jan. 10,1936.
