A 29-year-old man was arrested after an alleged assault occurred in the emergency department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown last Friday.

Deputy Chief Gary McGuigan said hospital staff members were examining the man when he became agitated.

“He punched a hole in the wall in one of the examining room walls, and it was at that point staff left the room and went out into the hallway,’’ McGuigan said. “The patient then followed staff and came out into the hallway. The patient came outside and grabbed a male staff member by the neck.’’

The deputy chief said the staff person was able to break free. Hospital security was called as were city police.

McGuigan said the man did additional damage to the examining room by kicking a hole in the wall. No one was seriously injured. The accused was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday to face charges that include assault, damage to property and breach of an undertaking.

No one from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital responded to a request for an interview for this story.
