Yoga workshops in Charlottetown this weekend

The Guardian (Charlottetown) - - COMMUNITY/ENTERTAINMENT -

Two yoga workshops are being held this weekend to help people incorporate Yoga into their daily life. 40 Day Sadhana is Friday, January 15, from 6-8:30 pm and Yin Yoga is Saturday, Jan. 16, from 9 am to noon. Both will be at Health Within Holistics Centre, 500B Queen St. in Charlottetown, and both are taught by Ruth Richman of Yoga Ink who has been teaching yoga classes and workshops for many years on P.E.I.

In Yoga the word Sadhana means daily practice and 40 days is the time needed to incorporate new actions or ideas into our busy lives to make them stick. Sometimes it is difficult to figure out you want to do for 40 days or how to fit it into an already full life.

The workshop will introduce many practices in several Yoga styles that take 3 minutes to 15 minutes. A bonus of the workshop is the 40 day support manual, “Living Light”, that all participants will receive which gives daily encouragement and acts as a journal. Also, there will be daily email support. The workshop can be attended on its own or participants can take the optional part two, in February, states a news release.

Saturday morning’s Yin work- shop explores the postures of the style as taught by Biff Mithoefer, an internationally known teacher who has been on P.E.I. several times.

He encourages Yin yoga to help counteract life’s stressors and also for sufferers of post traumatic stress syndrome, compassion fatigue, some persistent pain, mild depression and other syndromes that inhibit a full physical life. Yin is a yoga style that uses props, gravity, and time, to relax muscles, create more joint mobility, and release the connective tissue and fascia of the body. It is in the connective tissue that we store our emotional pain, which can create stiff bodies and tight joints. The class ends with a deep relaxation practice called Yoga Nidra or Yoga Sleep.

These workshops are open to yoga practitioners of all styles and at any level including beginners. Practices introduced include pranayama (breath), physical action, meditation and chanting. To pre-register email ruth@yo or call her at 902-583-2674. The two workshops are part of a seven workshop series. Special prices are in effect for attending all or one, go to www.yo for full information.
