Pan­thers sweep week­end games in Hal­i­fax

Cor­nelia Geib scored the win­ner 1:39 into the third as the UPEI Pan­thers de­feated the At­lantic Univer­sity Sport women’s hockey con­fer­ence-lead­ing Saint Mary’s Huskies 2-1 Sun­day in Hal­i­fax.

It was UPEI’s se­cond win of the week­end, fol­low­ing a 1-0 shutout of Dal­housie on Satur­day to end a 12-game win­less streak.

The Pan­thers im­proved to 49-3 and are two points be­hind Dal­housie (6-9-1) in the chase for the fi­nal play­off spot. The Huskies are 12-4-0. Sun­day, the Huskies took a

1-0 lead 22 sec­onds into the se­cond pe­riod on Mary Worndl’s unas­sisted goal. Ashtyn Bartlett tied it with a power-play goal four min­utes later.

Mag­gie Grim­mer had the as­sist.

Marie Soleil Desch­enes made 26 saves for the win while Re­becca Wea­gle sopped 13 shots in the loss.

On Satur­day, Kiana Strand’s power-play goal mid­way through the first was the win­ner.

Desch­enes made 25 saves for the shutout. Mati Bar­rett made 17 saves in the loss. The Tigers out­shot the Pan­thers 13-1 in the third pe­riod.
