Jean Michel Beauregard given 18-month driving ban for drunkdriving

A man who was seen pouring bleach over himself after his car went into a ditch was sentenced Wednesday to 10 days in jail after pleading guilty to impaired driving.

Jean Michel Beauregard, 42, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he was sentenced.

The court heard on Aug. 20 at 9:24 p.m. the RCMP responded to an accident on Route 1.

When they arrived at the scene they found Beauregard in his 2009 Honda Civic with beer cans inthe car.

Witnesses told the police they saw Beauregard’s car swerve, lose control and goin the ditch.

A witness also reported seeing Beauregard pouring bleach over himself and the car.

Breathalyzer samples taken later showed his blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.

Beauregard had no prior criminal record.

In handing down a sentence, Orr said the blood alcohol level and the accident were aggravating factors.

“Fortunately it was a singlevehicle accident,” she said.

Beauregard will serve his sentence on weekends.

Along with the jail time, Orr fined Beauregard $1,500 and ordered him to pay a $450 victim surcharge.

Orr banned him from driving for 18 months, which is higher than what is usually imposed for first offenders.

“Why 18? Because of the readings and the accident, but particularly the readings,” she said.
