Academy athletes win 15 gold medals during Prince Edward Classic
Island Gymnastics Academy athletes had plenty of podium finishes at the annual Prince Edward Classic competition held in Charlottetown during the weekend.
More than 450 of the region’s top gymnasts competed from the top Atlantic clubs, including national champion Hugh Smith and Olympian and 2015 Pan Am champion Ellie Black.
“Our gymnasts had impressive results in every category,” said Island Gymnastics Academy’s competitive program director Sharon Gareau. “On top of the overall finishes, we won gold medals on 15 events. It was a solid showing by the Academy gymnasts.”
Highlights from the women’s competition included a podium sweep by the Academy’s open 7 team. Alexa McClure won gold, Dara MacInnis silver and Emma Germain the bronze.
Annika Trivers was the allaround argo 5 champion with Lucy Kirby claiming the bronze. Sophie Mayne won the silver allaround medal in tyro 7 and Emma Christensen took second in novice 7.
Additional all-around bronze medallists included Paige Mills in open 8, Emma King in argo 4, Grace Potter in tyro 6 and Dayley Wood in novice 6.
On the men’s team, Isaac Bourque claimed the all-around gold in level 4 under 13 while teammate Gabriel Ing took silver.
In level 2 under 10, Jaycob Frank won silver in the allaround. Alex Mann was third all-around in the national open category.
The academy has hosted the event for the past 19 years.
