Academy ath­letes win 15 gold medals dur­ing Prince Ed­ward Clas­sic

Is­land Gym­nas­tics Academy ath­letes had plenty of podium fin­ishes at the an­nual Prince Ed­ward Clas­sic com­pe­ti­tion held in Char­lot­te­town dur­ing the week­end.

More than 450 of the re­gion’s top gym­nasts com­peted from the top At­lantic clubs, in­clud­ing na­tional cham­pion Hugh Smith and Olympian and 2015 Pan Am cham­pion El­lie Black.

“Our gym­nasts had im­pres­sive re­sults in ev­ery cat­e­gory,” said Is­land Gym­nas­tics Academy’s com­pet­i­tive pro­gram di­rec­tor Sharon Gareau. “On top of the over­all fin­ishes, we won gold medals on 15 events. It was a solid show­ing by the Academy gym­nasts.”

High­lights from the women’s com­pe­ti­tion in­cluded a podium sweep by the Academy’s open 7 team. Alexa McClure won gold, Dara MacIn­nis sil­ver and Emma Ger­main the bronze.

Annika Trivers was the al­laround argo 5 cham­pion with Lucy Kirby claim­ing the bronze. Sophie Mayne won the sil­ver al­laround medal in tyro 7 and Emma Chris­tensen took se­cond in novice 7.

Ad­di­tional all-around bronze medal­lists in­cluded Paige Mills in open 8, Emma King in argo 4, Grace Pot­ter in tyro 6 and Day­ley Wood in novice 6.

On the men’s team, Isaac Bourque claimed the all-around gold in level 4 un­der 13 while team­mate Gabriel Ing took sil­ver.

In level 2 un­der 10, Jay­cob Frank won sil­ver in the al­laround. Alex Mann was third all-around in the na­tional open cat­e­gory.

The academy has hosted the event for the past 19 years.
