Valentine’s Day-inspired book by Island author Kathy Birt will be launched Feb. 6 in Charlottetown
“Be Mine: Sharing Valentine Memories”, the latest book by self-published Island author Kathy Birt, is available just in time for Valentine’s Day.
The colourful and nostalgic book is a compilation of vintage valentines the author has saved since the 1950s.
A perfect Valentine’s Day gift, it has an all-ages appeal.
“(It’s) for children, parents, grandparents and all lovers who are looking for a unique gift from the heart,” says Birt, adding that “Be Mine: Sharing Valentine Memories” will be launched Saturday, Feb. 6 at Living Grace Café, Belvedere Avenue in Charlottetown at 2 p.m.
Describing herself as someone who needs order in her life, Birt says she is not averse purging when things pile up.
However, when it came to tossing her childhood valentines, she felt there was so much nostalgia attached to them she just couldn’t let them go.
It was about a year ago when the author began to plan for a valentine book containing all the cards she had saved from her days in the two-room Covehead Road school.
Birt says the valentines, in some cases, had some funny and personal messages on the back.
Take, for instance, the one from Billy who walked her to school. The message reads, “From the boy who thinks you should get up earlier.”
“I wanted to make sure I show the front and back of a few of those, in particular. I wrote something in the book about each person,” says Birt.
While she had months to think about the book and its name, it was not until early summer, while hosting a party at her apartment that she threw the question of a title out to her guests.
A good friend, Pat Walters, quickly suggested, “Be Mine” and the author added the rest of the book title.
Birt credits artist Kelly Gray for her design work.
“A lot of graphic expertise went into the book. And I had great co-operation from a local printer.”
Realizing there was some duplicate valentines, Birt decided that they would be used as cutout pages at the back of the book.
“People are excited about this ... having actual vintage valentines they can cut out and use.”
Birt is author of eight books, with four titles already available in local stores and shops.
