Brendan Alexander Poirier, 18, awaiting sentencing after sex offence involving 13-year-old girl

An 18-year-old has pleaded guilty to charges of sexual touching after a girl, who was five years younger than him, performed oral sex on him.

Brendan Alexander Poirier was in provincial court in Charlottetown Monday where he pleaded guilty to sexual touching involving someone younger than 16. He will be back in court in October for sentencing.

Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court Poirier was 18 and the victim was 13 on Nov. 22, 2015, when the two were alone at Poirier’s house.

Poirier was in high school at the time, the girl was in junior high and they met through the school system.

The court heard the two communicated through Facebook with their messages escalating to conversations of a sexual nature. While the two were alone at Poirier’s house, the victim performed oral sex on him.

Beck said the victim told a few friends what happened, word spread and other kids started calling her names.

Eventually the girl went to see her guidance counsellor.

The court heard Poirier confirmed with the police everything the victim reported, told them he felt some remorse after and said he knew he would be in trouble.

Beck said Poirier didn’t like that the victim was telling other people what happened and he started spreading rumours about the girl.

Poirier is also facing other allegations of what Beck referred to as a similar matter.

Defence lawyer Yolande Murphy said Poirier will be going to trial for those other allegations.

That trial will be held at a later date.

The matter for which Poirier pleaded guilty was adjourned until Oct. 12 for sentencing after Murphy asked for a presentence report.

Poirier is facing jail time because the offence has a mandatory minimum sentence of 90 days.
