To Canadian singer k.d. lang for CHEERS: bringing her solo act to P.E.I. Sept. 8. On the 25th anniversar­y of her platinum selling Ingénue album and the huge hit “Constant Craving,” which launched her into stardom around the world, she is coming to Charlottet­own’s Eastlink Centre as part of a 17-city coast-to-coast tour. She will perform classics from her 30-year repertoire. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 3.

To the City of Charlottet­own for its CHEERS: support of the anti-bullying campaign better known as Pink Shirt Day last Wednesday, Feb. 22. Staff wore pink and the City Hall bell tower was bathed in pink light in recognitio­n of the national antibullyi­ng campaign. Communitie­s across the country, including many on P.E.I., have taken up the cause to bring more attention to the issue of bullying, promote tolerance and empathy, and show collective support for the anti-bullying movement.

To the world famous Vienna Boys’ CHEERS: Choir who will make its P.E.I. debut March 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Confederat­ion Centre’s Homburg Theatre. Founded more than 500 years ago, the choir is certainly the most famous boys’ choir of the world. The P.E.I. concert will present the works of W. A. Mozart, Strauss, and Haydn, among others. Today, there are 100 choristers between the ages of nine and 14, divided into four touring choirs. They present around 300 concerts each year, attended by almost half a million spectators around the world.

To Sobeys employees, customers CHEERS: and vendors for helping those in need with their seventh annual Fill the Food Bank campaign. A total of $14,588.62 was raised on Prince Edward Island in support of local food banks while $420,476.94 was raised across Atlantic Canada during the threeweek campaign last fall. Sobeys also diverted 549,000 pounds of food and consumer products to regional food banks throughout Atlantic Canada supporting families in need.

To Dr. Edward MacDonald who was CHEERS: recognized by the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation with its Award of Honour. Dr. MacDonald is an associate professor of history at UPEI and a well-known teacher, editor and author. The award recognizes outstandin­g service and continued contributi­on to the heritage activities of Prince Edward Island. Dr. MacDonald has become the “go-to historical guy” on P.E.I. for his widerangin­g knowledge of Island history, and his generosity in sharing it through his teaching at UPEI and his participat­ion in public events.

To P.E.I.’s two Extra Mile Award CHEERS: winners which help celebrate 2017 Teacher/Staff Appreciati­on Week. Cathy Cairns, an administra­tive assistant from Englewood School in Crapaud, and Gail Finniss, vice-principal at Greenfield Elementary School in Summerside received special recognitio­n for going the extra mile for students, staff, parents and the school community.
