X-Women’s new head coach is an old face
Longtime assistant Ben Berthiaume now in charge of St. Francis Xavier team
Ben Berthiaume is the new head coach of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women’s hockey program after longtime head coach David Synishin stepped down recently.
Berthiaume has been an assistant coach with St. F.X. for 13 years, and served as interim head coach for the 2014-15 season, where he led the X-Women to a first-place finish in the Atlantic University Sport conference with a 20-4 record, won the AUS championship and finished fourth at the nationals.
The Antigonish, N.S., native was named the 2015 AUS coach of the year.
Synishin, who left the program to spend more time with family, coached at St. F.X. for 18 years — 14 as head coach.
He leaves with a 276-83-3 overall record, five AUS titles and silver and bronze medals at the nationals in 2011 and 2013.
