X-Women’s new head coach is an old face

Long­time as­sis­tant Ben Berthiaume now in charge of St. Fran­cis Xavier team

Ben Berthiaume is the new head coach of the St. Fran­cis Xavier X-Women’s hockey pro­gram af­ter long­time head coach David Synishin stepped down re­cently.

Berthiaume has been an as­sis­tant coach with St. F.X. for 13 years, and served as in­terim head coach for the 2014-15 sea­son, where he led the X-Women to a first-place fin­ish in the At­lantic Univer­sity Sport con­fer­ence with a 20-4 record, won the AUS cham­pi­onship and fin­ished fourth at the na­tion­als.

The Antigo­nish, N.S., na­tive was named the 2015 AUS coach of the year.

Synishin, who left the pro­gram to spend more time with fam­ily, coached at St. F.X. for 18 years — 14 as head coach.

He leaves with a 276-83-3 over­all record, five AUS ti­tles and sil­ver and bronze medals at the na­tion­als in 2011 and 2013.
