Eye­ing up a try

Si­mon Hood, of the Hunter’s Ale House P.E.I. Mud­men, tries to break a tackle Satur­day dur­ing Nova Sco­tia Se­nior Men’s Rugby League elite di­vi­sion ac­tion against the Fred­er­ic­ton Loy­al­ists at Co-op Field. Hood would score a try on the play, but Fred­er­ic­ton won the back-and-forth con­test 31-27 to im­prove to 3-0. P.E.I. is 1-1. The Mud­men scored with a cou­ple min­utes to play to cut the deficit to four and were deep in Fred­er­ic­ton’s end of the field, threat­en­ing to take the lead, but the Loy­al­ists de­fence held near the goal-line. Cap­tain and full­back Char­lie Wad­dell was the Mud­men’s man of the match. Wad­dell, Phil Gal­lant and Adam Fitz­patrick each scored a try while Fitz­patrick added two con­verts and one penalty kick. The Mud­men’s first di­vi­sion squad plays in Saint John, N.B., on Satur­day while the sec­ond di­vi­sion Mud­men team has its first game Sun­day with the Hal­i­fax Tars.
