Title chase begins Friday

The Guardian (Charlottetown) - - SPORTS -

The highlight of the P.E.I. golf season is this weekend.

The field will tee off in the Cooke Insurance amateur championships at the Stanhope Golf and Country Club on Friday. The 54-hole tournament will crown the provincial amateur champions in several categories.

“This is the largest field that we have had in years, with 90 players competing in six divisions,” said P.E.I. Golf Association executive director Ron MacNeill. “In addition to local golfers, we have players from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and the United States entered in the tournament.”

Twenty Island players will also qualify to represent the P.E.I. Golf Association at the Atlantic championship at Covered Bridge in New Brunswick in August.

The provincial championships will also go a long way in determining player-of-theyear honours. The tournament awards double points towards the prestigious year-end title.

“It’s a very competitive field this year, with a lot of very low handicaps,” said MacNeill. “These are unquestionably the best amateur golfers in the province.”

The wind-swept north shore course last hosted the provincial championship 10 years ago. With fast fairways and tight greens, the course will provide a stern test.

“(General manager) Merlin Affleck and his staff have the course in perfect condition, and everybody is looking forward to a great tournament,” said MacNeill. “If conditions are right, we are expecting great scoring from this field.”

The public is welcome to check out the action, which begins on Friday at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available throughout the weekend at www.peiga.ca.
