Heavy rains wash out Trans-Canada High­way north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — A sec­tion of the Trans-Canada High­way north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., is closed due to a washout.

Provin­cial po­lice say the washout has af­fected the high­way in the area of Alona Bay, about 100 kilo­me­tres north of Sault Ste. Marie. The high­way is closed in both di­rec­tions be­tween Wawa, Ont., and Batchawana Bay, Ont. _ a 160-kilo­me­tre stretch of road.

OPP say heavy rain in the area caused the washout and no de­tour is in place.

The clo­sure is ex­pected to last un­til Mon­day af­ter­noon.
