DesRoche enjoys big day at SRW
Pictonian Storm clocks fastest mile
Ryan DesRoche capped a big day at Red Shores at Summerside Raceway.
The 19-year-old driver notched his first career driving hat trick on Sunday afternoon’s 12-dash harness racing program. DesRoche drove Onehotvettt to a 2:01 victory in Race 5 for trainer Austin Sorrie; steered Painted Desert to a 1:57.4 triumph in Race 8, and closed out the program with a 1:59.1 victory behind Capitalism in the finale. Kristina McCourt trains Painted Desert and Capitalism.
The only DesRoche-driven horse not to hit the winner’s circle was Ultimate Faith. However, the 10-year-old brown mare finished second for trainer Philip DesRoches – Ryan’s father.
Pictonian Storm won the $2,259 featured event in Race 11. The six-year-old bay gelding by Western Paradise-Southview Sasha-Matts Scooter stopped the clock in 1:56.4. Minor Wisdom cut out fractions of 28 and 58.3 seconds, before Pictonian Storm led the field through the three-quarter fraction of 1:27.3.
Gary Chappell drove the Austin Sorrie-trained Pictonian Storm for owner Walter Simmons of Summerside.
Other winners on the card were:
Goodmorning Ky (1:59.3), Mia Lotta (2:02.3 – a maiden record), Southfield Spirit (2:00.3), Shes A Lover (2:00.4), Southfield Speedy (2:00.1), Howmac Royale (2:01.3), Dbs Rosco (2:00.2) and Keep Coming (1:58.1).
Chappell and Robert Chappell each recorded driving doubles.
The total wager was $22,010. Live racing resumes in Summerside on Sunday, July 30, with post time set for 1 p.m.
