Gavin named Alberton’s Vol­un­teer of the Year

His ac­tive in­volve­ment in the day-to-day op­er­a­tion of the West­ern Com­mu­nity Curl­ing Club has earned Alberton res­i­dent Roger Gavin the town’s Myles Get­son Vol­un­teer of the Year Award.

It was pre­sented to him dur­ing the town’s re­cent Canada Day cel­e­bra­tions.

Gavin has been a mem­ber of the club for 36 years and has served many years on the board of di­rec­tors in­clud­ing a term as pres­i­dent. As the club’s draw­mas­ter, he helps with in­stalling and main­tain­ing the ice and han­dles sched­ul­ing de­tails for the club.

He has coached sev­eral ju­nior men’s teams in provin­cial com­pe­ti­tions, earn­ing sev­eral peer­gen­er­ated coach­ing awards.

A statis­ti­cian and curl­ing strate­gist, he sched­ules bon­spiels, co-or­di­nates provin­cial and re­gional events at the club, and has helped keep le­gion curl­ing run­ning for two decades.

Also at the club, Gavin helps run the bar and can­teen and co­or­di­nates Texas Hold’em tour­na­ments.
