Sierra Club wants ban on oil exploration in Laurentian Channel

The Guardian (Charlottetown) - - THE ISLAND -

With oil and gas exploration a possibility in the Laurentian Channel, Sierra Club Canada Foundation is hoping to put a stop to it.

Recently, the federal government proposed allowing exploration in a new marine protected area in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The Foundation says the area is a key feeding and migratory pathway for whales and the endangered leatherback turtle.

The environmental group said it is also the only known mating grounds for porbeagle sharks and a habitat for basking sharks, smooth skates and black dogfish.

“This area deserves full protection,” the Sierra

Club Canada Foundation said.
