Funeral service held for Fr. McIver
Fr. Gerard McIver, a priest of the Diocese of Charlottetown, died Saturday at the Prince County Hospital, Summerside at age 79.
A native of Newton in Kinkora parish, he completed his studies at St. Dunstan’s University in 1960. Following four years of theology at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1966 at St. Malachy’s Church, Kinkora, by Bishop Malcolm MacEachern.
McIver’s first assignment was to St. Mary’s Parish in Souris where he remained for two years. He then was on loan to St. Pius X Parish in Toronto from 1968 to 1971 until his return to the Island as associate pastor at St. Paul’s Parish, Summerside.
In 1975, McIver suffered a major stroke from which he only partly recovered. This, however, brought an end to his active ministry and began a long life of suffering, despite much kindly assistance from family, friends and professional care. These past 40 years he resided in the Summerside he loved, including Summerset Manor since 2014.
McIver was one of 20 priests who came from Kinkora parish. His funeral mass took place Wednesday at St. Paul’s Church, Summerside, with burial in that parish cemetery where five priests are interred.
