Fu­neral ser­vice held for Fr. McIver

Fr. Ger­ard McIver, a priest of the Dio­cese of Charlottetown, died Satur­day at the Prince County Hos­pi­tal, Summerside at age 79.

A na­tive of New­ton in Kinkora parish, he com­pleted his stud­ies at St. Dun­stan’s Univer­sity in 1960. Fol­low­ing four years of the­ol­ogy at St. Au­gus­tine’s Sem­i­nary in Toronto, he was or­dained to the priest­hood in 1966 at St. Malachy’s Church, Kinkora, by Bishop Mal­colm MacEach­ern.

McIver’s first as­sign­ment was to St. Mary’s Parish in Souris where he re­mained for two years. He then was on loan to St. Pius X Parish in Toronto from 1968 to 1971 un­til his re­turn to the Is­land as as­so­ci­ate pas­tor at St. Paul’s Parish, Summerside.

In 1975, McIver suf­fered a ma­jor stroke from which he only partly re­cov­ered. This, how­ever, brought an end to his ac­tive min­istry and be­gan a long life of suf­fer­ing, de­spite much kindly as­sis­tance from fam­ily, friends and pro­fes­sional care. Th­ese past 40 years he resided in the Summerside he loved, in­clud­ing Sum­mer­set Manor since 2014.

McIver was one of 20 priests who came from Kinkora parish. His fu­neral mass took place Wed­nes­day at St. Paul’s Church, Summerside, with burial in that parish ceme­tery where five priests are in­terred.
