Driver on cell­phone crashes car with pas­sen­ger, in­fant in­side

A 19-year-old driver faces charges for us­ing a cell­phone and crashing her ve­hi­cle with a woman and an in­fant in­side.

Po­lice re­sponded to a 911 call about the sin­gle-ve­hi­cle crash in St. Catherines on Thurs­day at 9:45 a.m. The ve­hi­cle left the road, hit a mail­box and came to rest in a ditch.

Three oc­cu­pants of the ve­hi­cle — two women aged 18 and 19, along with an in­fant — were checked by Is­land EMS on scene for mi­nor in­juries.

The 19-year-old driver was charged un­der the High­way Traf­fic Act when the in­ves­ti­ga­tion re­vealed she was us­ing a cell­phone while op­er­at­ing the ve­hi­cle.

Speed and hav­ing a spare tire on the ve­hi­cle may have also been fac­tors in the crash. The RCMP is re­mind­ing driv­ers that us­ing any hand-held de­vice for any rea­son is a dan­ger­ous and il­le­gal prac­tice.
