A ‘refreshing worship album’

Chris Bray’s new release, ‘Joy in my Heart’, is uncomplicated album

The Guardian (Charlottetown) - - RELIGION - Tracey Evison Tracey Evison, a musician and educator on P.E.I., writes this column for The Guardian every second Saturday. She can be contacted by email at trevorandtracey@pei.sympatico.ca.

I’m always excited when I find a new artist that appeals to me. Sometimes that artist is presenting a debut recording but, like this week, sometimes I find an artist who simply hasn’t shown up on my musical radar before.

Chris Bray is one such artist. Bray released his first CD, “The Worship Album”, in 2009 and has been an active worship leader across Canada, primarily in Ontario where he makes his home. Further albums followed, as well as opportunities to serve as music director at Life Teen, to lead worship at the National March for Life rally at Parliament Hill and to focus on a vigorous touring schedule.

For his most recent project, “Joy in my Heart”, Bray has created 10 acoustic tracks. Produced by GI Holm, “Joy In My Heart” is an uncomplicated album of music that can easily to transferred to a church worship setting.

The album opens with “King in His Kingdom” and moves easily into a truly joyous version of the song, “Joy in my Heart.” Continuing on, “In the Name” has a laid-back energy while Bray sings, “In the name of the Father/ In the name of the Son/ In the name of the Spirit/ Lord, we come.”

“Full Surrender” is a genuine prayer of giving up the singer’s will to the will of the Father.

“I Will Trust in You” is a beautiful song that reminds listeners of God’s faithfulness in the hard times as well as the good times. “I will trust in You….I will follow where You lead me….I know You make all things new/ And You are with me and beside me….God You still remain.”

“What Is Heaven Like” attempts to answer that question: “There are streets made of gold/ and we’ll be white as snow/ if we love the Lord our God with all our heart….and we won’t need anything because we’ll be forever happy for all eternity/ That’s what Heaven’s like when you follow the King.”

All in all, this is a refreshing worship album that doesn’t rely on complicated instrumental accompaniment. It’s an artist lifting his heart in simple praise to the God who made him. It is a beautiful project that will be enjoyed by many.
