Mustangs stampede over Wanderers
Moncton wins first MFL title on over half a decade
The Moncton Mustangs achieved what seemed impossible by defeating the Saint John Wanderers 43-23 in the recent Maritime Football League championship game in Saint John, N.B.
Saint John was 7-0 coming into the contest, had a 36-game winning streak and was aiming for a league-record fifth straight McIntyre Cup, but Moncton had other ideas in winning its first title since 2010.
Moncton had a 10-7 lead at halftime then racked up three straight third quarter touchdowns which gave it a 30-7 edge Saint John couldn’t counter.
Steve Cormier ran for one score and quarterback Dan Comfort tossed TD passes to Akeem White and Cormier. Eugene McMinns and Neil Cunningham of the Island Mariners were named most outstanding receiver and most outstanding special team player, respectively, at the league’s recent awards.
All-star nods went to Mariners offensively lineman Chris Murphy, McMinns, defensive lineman Jasper Thompson and defensive back Cam Walsh.
Seven Wanderers and seven Mustangs were also winners at the recent awards. Alex Cameron was the lone winner from the Nova Scotia Buccaneers.
