Impaired driver who left accident scene jailed
A St. Teresa man who left the scene after crashing his vehicle down an embankment while he was drunk was sentenced recently to seven days in jail.
Brent Garth Callaghan, 35, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Georgetown where he pleaded guilty to impaired driving.
The court heard that on May 14 at around 1:30 p.m. the RCMP responded to a call about a single-vehicle collision in Peakes. When the police arrived, they found extensive damage to the rear of the vehicle, including a smashed window. They also found a case of beer in the trunk. In addition, there was an empty beer can in the glove compartment and another on the passenger seat.
Witnesses said they told Callaghan not to leave the scene and the court heard they saw him leave in a truck that stopped as it was driving by.
